Figo Pet Insurance Review 2019

BravoDollar Editor rating:

Figo Pet Insurance is one of the big players in the U.S. pet insurance world. The company offers a wide variety of customizable plans to fit you and your pet’s needs. But how does it compare to other pet insurance companies? Read our Figo Pet Insurance review to learn more.

About Figo:

Figo Pet Insurance has been in business for six years and has been accredited since May of 2016, according to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). The company is based out of Chicago. Figo works from Google’s Tech Hub Network and specializes in combining pet insurance with technology. This translates into an easy-to-use online platform for finding pet insurance. You can contact the company through a variety of methods, like traditional phone and fax, but also email and even text.

The plans are administered by Figo themselves, and coverage comes from Markel American Insurance Company – A Stock Company, Markel Insurance Company – A Stock Company or Independence American Insurance Company, a Delaware insurance company.

Pros:

  • Figo Pet Insurance prides itself on its three flexible plans covering injury and illness, which many other national pet insurance companies don’t have.
  • Being a tech-based company, Figo offers Pet Cloud, an app that helps you connect with other local pet owners and resources.
  • The company also has a 100 percent reimbursement option for medical expenses that qualify for coverage. That’s a rare perk in the pet insurance world.
  • Figo operates under one annual deductible. Rather than having to meet a deductible for each illness or injury, with Figo, you only have to meet one payment amount per year to be eligible for coverage.
  • Figo tends to have lower prices than the two competitors we compared (Nationwide and Trupanion).

Cons:

  • Figo is totally online, so that means you won’t have the physical store and agent experience.
  • Plans only cover your dog or cat, excluding exotic pets like birds, reptiles or rodents.

How Figo Pet Insurance Cost Compare:

As you can see, prices go up considerably between a 1-year-old dog and a 5-year-old dog, accenting the need to get pet insurance for your pet when they are young and healthy, if you can. Prices also fluctuate across all companies based on location: California is generally higher than Texas. Figo showed the widest price fluctuations between the two different breeds.

As for how Figo Pet Insurance compares for the ease of the quote process, it gives more information than the other two companies. Figo outlines annual benefits, reimbursement and deductible.  Nationwide covers annual benefit, percent back on vet bills and deductible. Trupanion lists deductible.

For pricing, Figo tends to be considerably lower than Trupanion and Nationwide on average, especially on the 1st tier plans. It also offers a clear $5K or $10K (depending on location) in annual benefits paid out on the lowest tier plan, as opposed to Nationwide’s “set annual benefits for each condition.” From the quote alone, it’s also difficult to tell what, if any, the annual benefits for Trupanion are.

For deductibles, Nationwide has a $250 annual deductible across all types of plans. We set Figo at a base $250 deductible to keep the comparison fair, though you can customize it from $100 to $750. Turpansion varies the widest on deductibles, since its plans are based off of them, from a $700 deducible to a $0 deductible.

Ease of Getting Figo Pet Insurance Quote

True to its vision, Figo Pet Insurance offers an easy, tech-friendly interface for finding out how much you’d pay for a plan each month. You simply select the giant “Get A Quote” button at the top right of the website. From there, it has you enter your basic information, like zip code, dog breed and your dog’s age and gender. It’s a streamlined, sleek design that’s very easy to navigate:

You also must give your email, though that field is not shown above.

After that, you simply hit “get quote.” Then this screen shows up:

It’s an easy-to-understand layout that tells you your monthly payment outright for the annual benefits you would be eligible to receive on that specific plan.

A very impressive feature is the reimbursement and deductible sliding bars. You can change the amounts in each by sliding the dot right or left. Then, in real-time, it shows your adjusted monthly premium.

For instance, we adjusted the deductible to $500 and the reimbursement to 70 percent. The monthly premium for the preferred plan went from $53.50 per month to $34.43:

We’re impressed by the way the interface gives you an interactive method for customizing your plan based on your own monthly budget and coverage goals.

You can also add additional features farther down on the page, like veterinary exam fees for accident or illness and rehabilitation fees. You can see those options here:

The added features nicely outline what they would do to your monthly payments.

All-in-all, getting a quote from Figo Pet Insurance is a streamlined and intuitive process that’s easy to read and figure out.

Figo Pet Insurance Coverage Options:

Figo Pet Insurance operates under its three customizable plans that are designated between the essential, preferred and ultimate plans. Annual benefits vary by area. For instance, in Texas, the essential plan covers $10,000 in annual veterinary benefits. The preferred plan covers $14,000 in annual veterinary benefits. However, in California, the essential plan covers $5,000 in annual benefits, and the preferred plan covers $10,000 in annual benefits. In both areas, the ultimate plan is unlimited for annual veterinary benefits.

As long as the condition is not pre-existing, meaning the condition is new and starts while the pet is on the plan, Figo Pet Insurance may cover:

  • Emergency and Hospitalization
  • Surgeries
  • Veterinary Specialists
  • Hereditary and Congenital Conditions
  • Chronic Conditions
  • Cancer Treatments
  • Prescriptions
  • Imaging
  • Knee Conditions
  • Prosthetics and Orthopedics
  • Hip Dysplasia

Figo is also somewhat unique in that it allows for optional veterinary exam and consultation fees, which many plans won’t cover.

The Bottom Line:

  • Figo offers a streamlined, high-tech way to compare how much you’re paying for the types of benefits you are getting, like how much your deductible is and coverage percentages. The company focuses on user-friendly technology and delivers.
  • A newcomer to the game, Figo has only been around for about 6 years. While reviews online have been mixed, the company does have a solid BBB rating.
  • On average, Figo is a more affordable option in terms of monthly payments over the two competitors we surveyed, Nationwide and Trupanion.
  • Figo Pet Insurance offers perks some other companies don’t, like its 100 percent reimbursement option, one annual deductible and Pet Cloud app.
